I LOVE chocolate, I mean who' doesn’t love chocolate?! Okay I do know a few people who are allergic to chocolate but I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t like it. So when Cowgirl Chocolates offered to send me a sampler of their finest I was excited.
Head Cowgirl Marilyn Lysohir founded Cowgirl Chocolates in 1997. Her two favorite things in the world are art (she has a notable career as a ceramic sculptor) and chocolate. In fact her first job was working in a chocolate factory in Pennsylvania. Marilyn mingled some favorite memories with some new ideas to create an American original, Cowgirl Chocolates...chocolates with a spicy cowgirl kick. She was the pioneer, one of the first companies to offer spicy chocolates in the world.
I knew that some of these chocolates before I tried them were going to be spicy and I’m pretty much a wimp when it comes to spicy things but as everything I get for review I was determined to try a little bit of each one. So my sister and I sat down and cut them all up in pieces to try (the kids even wanted to help but ended up leaving after a few, I think they were just too hot for them). I LOVED the mild truffles definitely my style, the Double Dark Chocolate truffle was my favorite because I’m a huge fan of dark chocolate! It was nice and rich which made the size of the truffle perfect but I also really liked the simplicity of it- sometimes gourmet flavors just aren’t my thing when it comes to chocolate.
After we finished all the mild truffles we moved on to the Spicy truffles I will say that again the Double Dark Chocolate was my favorite but they packed a punch that was too strong for me (good thing I was only eating a small piece). I think by the time I got to the third spicy one my mouth was just on fire and I couldn’t tell the flavors very well, yes I said I’m a huge wimp! I did say that my girls tried a few of the spicy truffles but weren’t impressed however my 2 year old daughter stuck through it all she wanted a piece of every single thing on the counter and didn’t show a sign of not enjoying the chocolates, even the spicy ones.
We saved the caramel for last, the Habanero Carmel. The second best thing when it comes to candy next to chocolate is caramels! However I know what a Habanero is and I definitely wasn’t sticking that huge piece in my mouth! So I cut off a tiny piece with my mouth already on fire from the truffles and took a bite, it actually wasn’t too bad, like the truffles it tastes really good at first and then the spicy kick hits you (almost like an aftertaste), I did however only take a tiny tiny bite of the caramel. My sister on the other hand thought she’d be funny and take a piece in to my dad’s office. He was on the phone so she stuck it on the counter and stepped back, as soon as he got off the phone he plopped it in his mouth without anyone being able to say anything. You should have seen the look on his face! He definitely has a taste for spicier things but when you aren’t expecting it well it was a shocker. So we didn’t finish the caramel and had quite a bit piece left on the kitchen counter- when I turned my back my two year old shoved the whole thing in her mouth, that was probably just as funny as my dad she was spitting it out and wiping her tongue, I had to grab her a piece of bread and a glass of milk to calm her down.
So needless to say our experience with Cowgirl Chocolates was one we will never forget! While I probably wouldn’t purchase the spicy truffles myself I would definitely buy their mild truffles and their mild solid chocolate bars, yum those sound good! I do however have a few friends that are all cowgirl and love spicy things that these would make the perfect holiday gift for!
